Introducing 2012: San Marino!

All the entries for the 2012 contest have been selected and now My Eurovision Diary will introduce them to you!

Entrant: Valentina Monetta

The story of Valentina Monetta representing San Marino is a sort of fairy tale. Taking part in the Eurovision Song Contest requires organisation, partners, resources, the right song and the right interpreter. SMtv in San Marino started working on that last autumn, evaluating different proposals. And initially Valentina wasn’t one of them!

The internal selection started, the proposals left were finally two and then one, but at the very last moment the unplanned happened. They needed a good, young, Sammarinese singer and they needed her straight away.

Valentina Monetta was singing on a Saturday night, and that same night, the SMtv director was there by chance. She listened to her, and really appreciated her. She was the perfect singer for the song they had already selected. On the Monday they organised an audition.

Monetta has got a rich career, and she is used to adapting every style to suit her. Two days afterwards she recorded the song and shot the video in the production studio.

Entry: The Social Network Song (oh, oh, uh, oh, oh)

This entry has been the MOST controversial entry in the contest, now it is not that controversial, but when it was called ‘Facebook’ it really was, because some people really liked it but others thought that is was a joke and that is broke some rules, the fact is that the song did broke some rules, like the one that says that no song shall content any kind of advertising. So it was revamped.

The Song was wrote by Timothy Touchton & José Santana Rodriguez and composed by Ralph Siegel, who is an Eurovision personality, otherwise many people say that his years of success are over. What do you think?

Tomorrow we will introduce the Cypriot entry, note that the entries will be introduced according to the running order!

  1. After two Sammarinese entries I really liked I had high hopes for the last remaining microstate in the contest again, in particular after I had read about Valentina’s biography in music. As a consequence, ‘The Social Network Song’ is one of the biggest disappointments for me this year. The song tries to hit the zeitgeist but ends up being just silly and puerile. However, it is extremely catchy (I sing it all the time although I would prefer not to), and if we take into consideration that Valentina is a pretty girl, this one might do better in televoting than many expect. I am very curious how they will stage it in May. For now and without any live material to judge … 3/12

  2. Valentina seems to be a good singer, the song is annoyingly catchy, but goes nowhere. Had this song been representing a country with many friendly neighbours, it would probably reach the final. Anyway, it does not deserve to be there, imo.

    • That is not true, we failed to qualify in 2009, Turkey and Armenia failed last year, your memory is quite short these days it seems! :/
