Rona Nishliu is not only a famous pop singers, she is also a devoted experimental jazz musician. She won the honour of representing Albania in the Eurovision Song Contest at the second attempt, and she will sing Suus in Baku.

Rona Nishliu was born in Mitrovica. Already as a high school graduate, she became known for her appearance in the talent show “Ethet & Krasta Show” which was held in Tirana during 2004. Music remains her passion. She took part in Festivali i Këngës, which is the Albanian national selection for the Eurovision Song Contest, in 2004 together with Teuta Kurti and Vesa Luma, and the trio was awarded the first junior prize.

Even though Rona Nishliu is known for being a pop singer in Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia and Montenegro, she is actually a devoted experimental jazz musician, too. Her interpretation is characterized with nuances of soul music influences as well. Her vocal range and interpretative power are her strongest points.

Entry: ‘Suus’

This is the 2rd time that Albania sends an entry completely sung in albanian. The song is Composed by Florent Boshnjaku and penned by Rona herself.

Many people wonders: What does the song mean? Well here is the Translation:

Hmm, in this world,
Where love does not exist anymore
Time has no time for us
Time has no time for us.

I land my plane
On lightless runway of your soul
Elbow their way through today
Those who yesterday couldn’t live
But yesterdays have no significance
From the turbulent seas were swallowed up
Hmmm, tomorrows won’t bring anything
Besides hopeless hope and insanity

So just let me cry…cry…cry…
‘cause this is what I do best now!-
‘cause this is what I do best now.

Tomorrow we will introduce the Romanian entry, note that the entries will be introduced according to the running order!

  1. Albania 2012 is more a performance than a song. However, it is not one of those glossy over the top performances which have become a token of ESC since the introduction of televoting. Quite the contrary, “Suus” is all about experiencing Rona perform her song live, about Rona conveying those strong emotions that build and build throughout the song. In fact, while I love watching both her live performances and the high quality video, I find just listening to “Suus” without watching Rona a tad irritating. But that is the way it has always been with art (in contrast to entertainment), true art requires your full attention and does not allow you to do something else at the same time, ironing or cleaning the house f. e. Art is absolute and uncompromising. And exactly at this point I begin to worry. Won’t Rona and her song be terribly out of place in a song contest which most people think of as a family entertainment show? Whatever the result will be, kudos to Albania for sending what is certainly one of the most artistic and sophisticated efforts in the history of ESC. Finally, the very simple yet effective lyrics suit the song perfectly and the orchestration is exquisite. 12/12 and 1st place on my pre-rehearsals list. 🙂
